Petri Scholarship Winner

2019 Petri Winner: Ian Schipper

Ian Schipper, bass-baritone, is a rising singer “whose rich, powerful voice is thrilling audiences” both as soloist and in choral ensembles. Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Music and Economics at St. Olaf College, Mr. Schipper sings in the world-renowned St. Olaf, and is also featured this season as Bass Soloist in St. Olaf’s presentation of the St. John Passion and Christ lag in Todes Banden. Summer institutes include the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria, and the Oregon Bach Festival Stangeland Youth Choral Academy. Recent performances include the Rückert Liederabend Concert in the GrazMuseum and Musiksalon in Graz, Austria. Mr. Schipper has studied voice with Robert C. Smith and Wilfred Williams of St. Olaf College, and Michael Meraw of New England Conservatory. He is also an award-winning composer with Music Teachers National Association. Mr. Schipper hails from Portland, Oregon.

Schipper was awarded an $8000 scholarship.

Five other finalists were awarded $500 scholarships including, Olga Melendez Valdes, Anson Ka-Lik Sin, Kenneth Ross, Savannah Panah, and Daniel Hughes.

The Petri Scholarship Competition is held every other year and provides support for music study toward a performing career.
