SUMMARY:Grant Event-Music and the Brain: How We Hear and Understand Melody and Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Location: Zoom\, for access please contact Tammy Johnson\nPresenting District: Umpqua Valley-South Coast\nPresenter: Dr. Crystal Zimmerman [expand title=”Read Presenter Bio” swaptitle=” “]Crystal Zimmerman grew up in Wichita\, Kansas\, where she earned a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy from Wichita State University. At the University of Oregon\, she earned a dual Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree with an emphasis in Piano Performance and a supporting area of Musicology. \nDr. Zimmerman is professor of piano at Willamette University where she teaches class piano\, individual piano lessons\, as well as courses in music technology. At Willamette\, she is also staff accompanist and coordinator of the accompanying program. She frequently performs in collaborative\, chamber music\, and solo recitals as well as being pianist in the Salem Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Zimmerman is in demand as a lecturer and clinician\, and her articles have been featured in American Music Teacher magazine. She is currently working with FJH music company on the series\, Succeeding with Sonatinas.[/expand]\nProgram Description: In this lecture Dr. Zimmerman will focus on music and the brain\, demonstrating that there is no one singular part of the brain which responds emotionally to music.[expand title=”Read More” swaptitle=” “]Rather\, there are many different parts responding to different aspects of music: to pitch\, to frequency\, to timbre\, to tonal intervals\, to consonance\, to dissonance\, to rhythm\, to melodic contour\, and to harmony. This lecture will focus primarily on what is occurring in the brain when we recognize melody and rhythm. Much of the discussion will focus on the jobs of the left and right hemispheres in the brain\, and how we study the impact of music in the brain. By the end of the lecture the audience should have a better understanding of the powers of music cognition in the brain.[/expand] \nThis program will be held in person\, if possible. DESCRIPTION:Contact: Myrna Setiawan\nRegistration Deadline: January 8\, 2021 \nWebsite: https://tvomta.org/student-events-and-awards \nFounded in 1895\, the OMTA Baroque Festival\, formerly Jr. Bach\, is open to instrumentalists through age 19 and singers through age 24. Districts from around the state send a group of “winners” to perform at the State Baroque Festival Recital. The TVOMTA Baroque Festival is open to students in either competitive or non-competitive status\, and students receive valuable feedback from the adjudicator on their performance. \nRecorded performance to be submitted for audition adjudication. Comments & results of winner from competitive division to be announced on Jan 30\, 2021. \n
